The mission of Imago Relationships International, New York, is to transform relationships in the world. We teach key insights into how relationships work and the effective use of dialogue skills, both directly and in partnership with others.
Imago Relationship Therapy is a systematic theory of committed love relationships. The theory is based on the premise that childhood experiences form an unconscious image or imago. Unconscious forces that attract us to our partner are also the source of conflicts and power struggles that develop in committed relationships. Imago Relationship Therapy helps couples learn how to heal by becoming conscious of the role childhood experience plays in committed relationships.
Singles will find Imago Relationship Therapy helpful in preparing them for a committed, healthy relationship. Imago will help them create a plan for change that builds relationship skills, identifies childhood issues and allows the gradual integration of the lost and denied self.
Certified Imago Therapists are psychiatrists and psychologists who have completed extensive postgraduate training in Imago Relationship Therapy. They maintain an ongoing commitment to continue their education and training in an effort to provide the best possible services to their clients.
Imago is practiced in 26 countries across the world and into many cultures. There is something universal about love and its struggles. It is a distinctly human, rather than a cultural, phenomenon. Imago Therapists know these struggles and use the same processes in their own lives that they use to help others. This personal experience gives them and the Imago process substantial credibility. The connection that is achieved by couples not only joins them with each other but to all others, to the cosmos and to the divine. Couples focus on the relationship rather than on themselves and, in so doing, they experience the paradoxical reality that by focusing on what the relationship needs, their own needs will ultimately be met. We now believe that all healing occurs in relationship.
Imago believes that conscious couplehood is the basis of social transformation and all related Imago therapists are engaged in the project of “transforming the world, one relationship at a time.” Couples everywhere desire relational connections that are safe.
In Namibia there are 5 Certified Imago Therapists, namely Dr R Schwindack, Swakopmund, Lorain Lacock, Walvis Bay, Hilze Strauss, Hilda Lösch and Fritsie van Rooyen, all from Windhoek.
